If your looking for a mission style table with a bit elegance to it then the Madison table is a great choice. I have a 42 inch pub table with 4 barstools in my kitchen. It has a square top instead of a boat shaped top , which is standard. My wife chose the 42 inch high model. Personally I think we should have went with the 36″ high version. It’s a bit high in our small kitchen.
One of the advantages of such a high table is that the barstools are the perfect height, 30″. You don’t have to sit down in them like a typical chair. You just slide right on. For people with bad knees, like my wife, or arthritis it’s a great solution and pain saver. I you’re under 5′ 6″ or so you’ll have to climb up on them so the 24 inch barstools with the 36″ high table would be better.
We chose to build our table in hickory because it’s hard as a rock and goes very well in our more rustic interior. Hickory has a grain between oak and maple. Without staining it goes anywhere from a really light color, like a pine or maple, to dark brown stripes. The grain pattern ranges from almost none like maple, to large looping bands like oak. Anyway, the madison table is base off a stickley design. As a matter of fact the only design detail it’s missing is a groove around the skirting of the table. The legs are mounted to the table in a corner block configuration with 2 – 1/2 inch bolts holding them. The top has an under bevel making the edge profile nice and clean. All in all this is a great looking table that fit’s well in any mission decor.
